Noah Beery voit le jour le 17 janvier 1882, à Kansas city (Missouri). Il est le second fils de Noah Webster Beery, policier, et de Margaret Fitzgerald, femme au foyer. William Beery, son frère ainé sera également comédien et son cadet, Wallace Beery, la grande star hollywoodienne que l’on connaît. À seize ans, il fait ses débuts dans une troupe de théâtre ambulant, sept ans plus tard il fait de la figuration à Broadway. Après une douzaine d’années sur scène, il rejoint son frère Wallace à Hollywood, pour se lancer à son tour dans une carrière d’acteur de cinéma.
En 1916, Noah Beery fait ses vrais débuts à l’écran dans «The social highwayman» un drame de et avec Edwin August. Avec le soutient de son jeune frère, il enchaine les petits rôles dans des dizaines de productions. Pendant la période du cinéma muet, de films en films, il s’impose comme l’un des acteurs de second plan les plus respectés des écrans américains. Il travaille, entre-autres, sous la direction de Cecil B. DeMille, James Cruze, Donald Crisp, Allan Dwan, Marshall Neilan et Raoul Walsh, et donne notamment la réplique à Sessue Hayakawa dans «La blessure qui sauve» (1918) et Alla Nazimova dans «La lanterne rouge» (1919). En 1920, il incarne le Sergent Pedro Gonzales dans «Le signe de Zorro», superproduction de Fred Niblo avec Douglas Fairbanks dans le rôle du héros masqué. En 1923, il est la vedette avec son frère Wallace Beery de «Stormswept» dont la publicité de l’affiche mentionne la réunion des deux plus grands acteurs de composition du cinéma américain. Il offre aussi une belle prestation en Sergent Lejaune dans «Beau Geste» (1926) première adaptation du roman de Percival Christopher Wren par Herbert Brenon, avec Ronald Colman dans le rôle-titre.
Avec l’arrivée du cinéma parlant, doté d’une belle voix, il trouve sa place dans des comédies musicales telles que «Sous le ciel du Texas» (1930) de Michael Curtiz et «Golden dawn» (1930) de Ray Enright. L’enregistrement des ses chansons sur disque pour «Brunswick Records» sont de grands succès, ce qui lui vaut une belle popularité. Mais, alors que la carrière de son frère décolle et que celui-ci devient l’acteur le mieux payé de son époque, Noah Beery reste cantonné dans des rôles secondaires. Sans amertume ni jalousie, Noah reste malgré tout très proches de Wallace et enchaine des apparitions dans plus de quatre-vingts productions jusqu’en 1945. Il partage l’affiche à plusieurs reprises avec son fils unique Noah Beery Jr., né en août 1913 de son mariage avec la comédienne Marguerite Lindsay, dans plusieurs petits westerns de série B, parmi lesquels: «La vallée des hommes perdus» (1933), un sérial en douze épisodes réalisé par Colbert Clark et Armand Schaefer, et «Overland mail» (1942) un autre film en quinze volets de Ford Beebe et John Rawlins. Dans les années quarante, il retrouve Wallace Beery pour «Salute to the marines» (1943) de S. Sylvan Simon, «Barbary Coast gent» (1944) de Roy Del Ruth et «This man’s navy» (1945) de William A. Wellman.
En janvier 1945, Noah Beery fait son retour à Broadway pour la comédie musicale produite par Michael Todd, «Up in Central Park» de Herbert Fields et Dorothy Fields. Epuisé, alors qu’il célèbre l’anniversaire de son frère à Beverly Hills, il meurt terrassé par une crise cardiaque le 1er avril 1946 dans les bras de Wallace Beery. Il repose au Forest Lawn Memorial Park de Hollywood Hills.
