Fille de Fred Talmadge, chômeur et alcoolique invétéré, et de Margaret Talmadge, femme de caractère à l’esprit indomptable, Norma Talmadge voit le jour le 26 mai 1893 à Jersey City. Sœur ainée de Constance Talmadge (1897/1973) et de Natalie Talmadge (1898/1969), son enfance est marquée par la pauvreté et l’abandon du foyer par son père le soir du Noël de ses sept ans. La mère, avec l’énergie du désespoir, élève ses trois filles dans le misérable quartier de Brooklyn en pratiquant plusieurs petits métiers. Madame Talmadge décide alors que ses filles seront actrices. Elle inscrit Norma chez un photographe qui cherche des modèles pour des chansons illustrées de diapositives présentées dans les salles de cinéma, pour que le public puisse chanter en chœur. Après plusieurs refus, l’adolescente est finalement engagée et apparaît pour la première fois sur les écrans en 1909.
Accompagné de son énergique mère, Norma Talmadge se présente fréquemment aux portes des studios «Vitagraph» à Flatbush, avec l’espoir de décrochée un petit rôle. Sa persévérance est finalement récompensée lorsque la scénariste Breta Breuil, attirée par la beauté de la jeune fille, lui propose une participation dans «The household pest» (1910). Elle signe un contrat avec la «Vitagraph», de vingt-cinq dollars par semaine, et joue des rôles secondaires dans, entre-autres, «La case de l’Oncle Tom» (1910) de J. Stuart Blackton et «In neighboring kingdoms» (1910) de William Humphrey. Sa prestation aux côtés de Maurice Costello et Florence Turner dans «A tale of two cities» adaptation du roman de Charles Dickens, incite les dirigeants du studio à lui confier des rôles de plus en plus importants. Jusqu’en 1915, la jeune actrice est l’interprète d’une centaine de courts-métrages, presque tous dirigés par Van Dyke Brooke.
En mars 1915, toujours chaperonnée par sa mère et accompagnée des ses sœurs, Norma Talmadge part pour Hollywood. Elle est immédiatement engagée par la «National Pictures» pour être la tête d’affiche de «The captivating Mary Carstairs» de Bruce M. Mitchell. Le film est un échec alors que Constance Talmadge triomphe dans des productions de la «Fine Arts Film Company » de David Wark Griffith. Avec l’appui de sa sœur, elle signe un contrat avec la société de Griffith tourne sept films qui font d’elle une star hollywoodienne, puis revient s’installer sur la Côte Est. En 1916, elle rencontre et épouse le producteur Joseph M. Schenck. Avec l’aide de son mari, elle fonde la «Norma Talmadge Film Corporation» et produit «Panthea» un très beau succès dirigé par Allan Dwan. En 1920, elle déplace sa société en Californie et confirme son statut de grande vedette dans une vingtaine de ses propres productions, parmi lesquelles: «Le signe sur la porte» (1921) avec Lew Cody, «La duchesse de Langeais» (1922) avec Adolphe Menjou, «Kiki» (1926) avec Ronald Colman, «La colombe» (1927) avec Noah Beery et «La dame aux camélias» avec Gilbert Roland. Après l’accueil frileux des «Nuits de New York» (1929) et de «Madame du Barry» (1930) ses deux seuls films parlants, elle abandonne définitivement le cinéma.
En avril 1934, Norma Talmadge divorce de Schenck, se remarie immédiatement avec le producteur George Jessel, tente un come-back dans les émissions radiophoniques de son second mari, sans succès, suivi d’un nouveau divorce en 1939. C’est auprès du Docteur Carvel James, son troisième époux, qu’elle fini sa vie, emportée par une attaque la veille de Noël 1957, à Las Vegas dans le Nevada.
