Le 8 octobre 1872, Ralph Lewis naît à Englewood, dans l’Illinois, petit ville qui deviendra un des secteurs communautaires de Chicago de 1889. C’est à la fin du XIXème siècle qu’il commence à se produire sur scène dans tous les Etats-Unis. En 1899, il joue sa première pièce à New York, au Criterion Theatre, «Barbara Frietchie» de Clyde Fitch. Tout en continuant ses tournées dans le pays, il revient régulièrement à Broadway pour être l’interprète de pièces comme: «When knighthood was in flower» (1904), de Paul Kester d’après un roman de Charles Major, «The primerose path» (1907) et «The fight» (1912) de Bayard Veiller.
En 1912, Ralph Lewis a quarante ans quand il signe son premier contract cinématographique avec la société new-yorkaise «Reliance Film Company». Il apparaît dans plusieurs films, souvent aux côtés de Irving Cummings. En 1914, il rencontre David Wark Griffith qui l’engage dans quelques-unes de ses productions dont: «Naissance d’une nation» (1915), où il incarne le vaniteux et hypocrite Austin Stoneman, et «Intolérance» (1916) où il est le gouverneur abolitionniste. Délaissant le théâtre, Ralph Lewis est employé dans une centaine de films, alternant les personnages secondaires et les rôles de premier plan jusqu’à la fin de l’ère du muet. Il est alors le partenaire des plus grandes stars de cette époque, de Douglas Fairbanks à Rudolph Valentino, en passant par Florence Vidor, Clara Bow ou Virginia Valli. Une anecdote concernant notre acteur: David Butler, alors jeune comédien, se souvient avoir été témoin d’une scène entre T. Hayes Hunter et Ralph Lewis qui doit jouer avec un violon factice dans le film du réalisateur. Mais, au moment du tournage, le violon est remplacé par un Stradivarius que le studio a loué pour la journée. La façon de jouer du violon de Lewis ne convient pas au metteur en scène et les deux hommes en viennent aux mains. Excédé, Ralph Lewis brise le Stradivarius sur la tête de T. Hayes Hunter. Il est immédiatement renvoyé du plateau et ne jouera pas dans le film. La production, jugée responsable de cet incident, dut s’acquitter de plusieurs milliers de dollars pour la détérioration du Stradivarius.
Dans les années trente, Ralph Lewis est un second rôle très sollicité. On le voit notamment dans des westerns de série B dont les héros sont interprétés par John Wayne, Tom Tyler et Hoot Gibson. On l’aperçoit souvent dans des rôles de notables. Il est, entre-autres, directeur de prison dans «Une erreur judiciaire» (1932) de Victor Schertzinger; médecin dans «Fille de feu» (1932) de John Francis Dillon; juge dans «Riot squad» (1934) et dans «Fighting hero» (1934) de Harry S. Webb; politicien dans «Votez pour moi» (1935) de Roy Del Ruth; libraire dans «Docteur Socrate» (1935) de William Dieterle; shérif dans «Sunset range» (1935) de Ray McCarey; sénateur dans «Le doigt qui accuse» (1936) de James P. Hogan; etc. Notons aussi sa présence en 1934, dans le sérial «La cité perdue» de Harry Revier, avec William Stage Boyd, Kane Richmond et Claudia Dell en tête d’affiche.
En décembre 1937, Ralph Lewis est heurté à Los Angeles par une limousine conduite par un des chauffeurs travaillant pour Jack L. Warner. Souffrant de multiples blessures, l’accident lui est fatal. Après une prolifique carrière sur scène comme à l’écran, il décède le 4 décembre, à l’âge de 65 ans. Il était marié avec l’actrice Vera Lewis avec qui il a partagé l’affiche dans six films.
