Né de parents pharmaciens, Marion Robert Morrison voit le jour le 26 mai 1907, à Winterset dans l’Iowa (Etats-Unis). Sportif accompli, il décroche une bourse d’étude à l’Université de Californie du Sud, ce qui lui permet de servir dans l’équipe de football américain universitaire. Remarqué par Tom Mix, il entre à la Twentieth Century Fox en 1926, comme accessoiriste, et apparaît occasionnellement dans quelques films. L’année suivante, il rencontre John Ford qui lui offre un rôle de figurant dans «Maman de mon cœur». Une solide amitié se tisse alors entre les deux hommes, qui ne prendra fin qu’à la mort du grand réalisateur en 1973. Jusqu’à la fin des années vingt, le jeune Marion enchaîne divers seconds rôles.
En 1930, il obtient enfin son premier grand rôle dans «La piste des géants» de Raoul Walsh. Pour ce film, le chef de la production de la Fox, lui choisit le pseudonyme de John Wayne. L’acteur devient alors le héros de plusieurs westerns très populaires de série B, notamment avec le serial des «Trois mousquetaires» de Colbert Clark et Armand Schaefer. Mais la carrière de Wayne s’enlise rapidement dans de mauvaises productions. En 1939, John Ford le remet sur les rails du vedettariat avec le superbe film «La chevauchée fantastique» avec George Bancroft et Claire Trevor.
Dans les années quarante, John Wayne devient une des plus grandes stars de l’histoire du cinéma. Il tourne pour: Cecil B. DeMille dans «Les naufrageurs des mers du sud» (1942) et Howard Hawks dans «La rivière rouge» (1948). Mais c’est avec John Ford qu’il confirme son statut de héros légendaire dans «Le massacre de Fort Apache» (1947), «Le fils du désert» (1948), «La charge héroïque» (1949), «Rio Grande» (1950) avec Maureen O’Hara qui sera sa partenaire à plusieurs reprises, «L’homme tranquille» (1952), «La prisonnière du désert» (1956) et «Les cavaliers» (1959). Entre temps, il devient son propre producteur en 1946, pour le film «L’ange et le mauvais garçon» de James Edward Grant, et tourne sous la direction des plus grands cinéastes: Henry Hathaway, Allan Dwan, John Farrow, Michael Curtiz, Josef von Sternberg, Howard Hawks, Nicholas Ray et William A. Wellman.
En 1960, John Wayne réalise avec panache «Alamo» avec Richard Widmark. Il renouvellera l’expérience, très contestée, en 1967 avec «Les bérets verts». Le reste de sa carrière, «Le Duke», comme il aime se faire appeler, reste solidement ancré dans son statut de superstar hollywoodienne. En 1964, il sort vainqueur de son premier combat contre le cancer. En 1968, sa prestation dans «Cent dollars pour un shérif» de Henry Hathaway, est couronnée par l’Oscar du meilleur acteur. Un Oscar qui lui est offert bien tardivement. Mais il comprendra que sa non-participation volontaire au conflit mondial de 1940-1945 lui aura valu quelques solides reproches. Le reste de sa vie sera d’ailleurs parsemé d’amères regrets concernant ces événements.
En 1976, John Wayne joue une dernière fois dans le film au titre prémonitoire, «Le dernier des géants» avec Lauren Bacall et James Stewart. En avril 1979, il apparaît publiquement une dernière fois à la cérémonie des Academy Awards. Il meurt le 11 juin 1979, à son domicile de Los Angeles, emporté par un double cancer. Son corps sera inhumé au cimetière de Pacific View, à Corona del Mar en Californie.
