Francis X. Bushman est né le 10 janvier 1883 dans une famille aisée de Baltimore, dans le Maryland, ville où il est élève à l’école catholique Immaculée Conception puis au Collège Ammendale. Le virus du théâtre l’a contaminé assez tôt et il pense déjà à une carrière artistique. Entouré de parents qui nourrissent des rêves un peu plus raisonnables pour lui, il pratique néanmoins le théâtre en amateur durant ses études de médecine. Egalement passionné de sport, il est membre du Maryland Athletic Club où il pratique assidument la lutte, la boxe et la course cycliste. Des activités physiques qui vont développer un physique avantageux et lui permettre de remporter à vingt ans un concours de musculature. Suite à cette compétition, il abandonne ses études, devient modèle pour un sculpteur new-yorkais pour qui il pose souvent nu et prend des cours de théâtre. En juin 1902, il épouse Josephine Duval, couturière de son métier, avec qui il aura trois filles et deux garçons.
Les débuts de la carrière de comédien de Francis X. Bushman coïncide avec son petit rôle dans la comédie musicale «The queen of Moulin Rouge» jouée à Broadway en 1908. Il est une valeur sure de la scène américaine quand, en représentation à Chicago en 1911, il est sollicité par les dirigeants de la compagnie Essanay pour faire du cinéma. Le comédien accepte et signe un contrat stipulant que l’existence de sa femme et ses cinq enfants reste cachée pour ne pas ternir son image d’amant potentiellement accessible auprès de son public féminin. Au cours des sept années suivantes, Francis X. Bushman va être l’interprète de presque deux cents films où son nom est souvent associé à celui de Dorothy Phillips, Bryant Washburn, Ruth Stonehouse, Wallace Beery et Beverly Bayne.
De 1914 à 1918, Francis X. Bushman est l’acteur le plus populaire en Amérique, on le surnomme alors «The King of movies», pour le film «Roméo et Juliette» (1916), son cachet est de 250 000 dollars. Mais, en 1918, sa femme demande le divorce suite à sa relation avec Beverly Bayne et le scandale s’étale à la une des journaux. Ses admiratrices découvrent avec stupéfaction que leur idole est mariée avec cinq enfants et vient juste d’épouser Bervely. Son image s’en trouve irrémédiablement détériorée. Bervely lui donne un fils, Richard, mais ils finiront par se séparer en juin 1925. L’acteur se mariera encore à deux reprises, avec Norma Emily Atkin de 1932 à 1956 puis à Iva Millicient Richardson qui sera sa veuve.
Francis X. Bushman tourne encore des premiers rôles pour la Metro et pour la Vitagraph. On se souvient de sa performance en Massala dans le «Ben Hur» (1925) réalisé par Fred Niblo avec Ramon Novarro dans le rôle-titre. Les derniers temps du muet, il est encore en tête d’affiche face à Mae Murray, Corinne Griffith, Billie Dove ou Joan Crawford. Avec l’arrivée du cinéma parlant, il est relégué aux seconds rôles. On le voit, entre autres, en chef de la police dans le sérial «Dick Tracy» (1936) avec Ralph Byrd, dans son propre rôle pour «Un crime parfait» (1951) avec Richard Conte et Julie Adams, ou en vieux roi Saul dans «David et Bethsabée» (1951) avec Gregory Peck et Susan Hayward. Il travaille aussi un peu pour la télévision, notamment sur les séries «Perry Mason» (1960/64) et «Batman» (1966), puis, après un dernier film en 1966, Francis X. Bushman meurt le 23 août 1966, à son domicile de Pacific Palisades, emporté par une crise cardiaque.
