Le 18 mars 1892, Edith Storey voit le jour à New York. Elle est la fille de William Chase Storey et de Minnie (née Thorn). Son jeune frère Robert (1895/1959) connut lui aussi un bref parcours d’acteur. Elle commence sa carrière de comédienne au théâtre et fait notamment partie de la distribution de «Mrs Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch», une pièce d’Anne Crawford Flexner, d’après la nouvelle de Alice Hegan Rice, représentée à Broadway durant la saison 1904-1905.
Edith Storey débute à l’écran en 1908 à la Vitagraph, où elle incarne par exemple le héros de Dickens dans la première adaptation cinématographique du célèbre roman «Oliver Twist» réalisée par J. Stuart Blackton, en 1909. Elle est ensuite la principale vedette féminine de la branche américaine de la compagnie de Georges Méliès, dirigée par le frère de celui-ci, Gaston Méliès. En 1910 et 1911, elle brille alors particulièrement dans des westerns réalisés au Texas, dans lesquels, montant parfaitement à cheval, elle se montre tout à fait à l’aise. On la voit ainsi dans, entre autres, «The paleface princess» (1910), «The padre’s secret» (1910), «White doe’s lovers» (1910), «The romance of Circle Ranch» (1910), «In the tall grass country» (1910), «How Mary met the Cowpunchers» (1911), «My prairie flower» (1911), «The schoolmarm of Coyote Country» (1911), «An unwilling cowboy» (1911), «The immortal Alamo» (1911), «Bessie’s ride» (1911),… Des films tous réalisés par William F. Haddock avec Francis Ford et William Clifford comme principaux partenaires.
Edith Storey retourne ensuite à la Vitagraph, dont elle reste une des stars jusqu’en 1917 avec des films comme «Billy the Kid» (1911) de Laurence Trimble; «How Betty won the school» (1911) auprès de Mabel Normand débutante; «Her cowboy lover» (1911) de Rollin S. Sturgeon; «Vieilles lettres d’amour» (1912) de Hal Reid; «Le cœur d’Esmeralda» (1912) de William V. Ranous; «A marriage of convenience» (1912) de James Young; «Hearts of the first empire» (1913) de William Humphrey; «Peggy’s burglar» (1913) de Ralph Ince; «The leading Lady» (1913) de Ned Finley; «The Christian» (1914) de Frederick A. Thomson; «In the Latin Quarter» (1914) de Lionel Belmore; «The dust of Egypt» (1915), «On her wedding night» (1915), «Susie, the sleuth» (1916), «The shop girl» (1916), «The tarentula» (1916), tous dirigés par de George D. Baker; «Aladdin of Broadway» (1917) de William Volbert, etc. Elle tient ensuite le rôle principal de plusieurs productions de la Metro, parmi lesquelles on peut citer «The Eyes of Mystery» (1918) et «Revenge» (1918) de Tod Browning, «The silent woman» (1918) de Herbert Blaché ou encore «As the sun went down» (1919) de E. Mason Hopper.
Après s’être éloignée du monde du Septième Art afin de travailler quelque temps comme ambulancière pour la «National League for Women’s Service», Edith Storey termine sa carrière cinématographique en tête d’affiche de «Moon madness» (1920) de Colin Campbell, avec Sam De Grasse, «Beach of dreams» (1921) de William Parke, avec Noah Beery, et «The greater profit» (1921) de William Worthington, avec Pell Trenton, tous distribués par la firme Robertson-Cole. Elle se retire le reste de sa vie dans la campagne de Long Island. L’ancienne vedette du cinéma muet décède le 9 octobre 1987, à son domicile du petit village de Northport.
