Fille de l’acteur Jack Roland et de son épouse Elizabeth Hauser, chanteuse surnommée le Rossignol Californien, Ruth Roland voit le jour le 26 août 1892, à San Francisco, en Californie, où son père dirige le théâtre Columbia. Enfant de la balle, elle joue au théâtre dès son plus jeune âge sous le nom de Baby Ruth. Adolescente, elle fait ses études au Hollywood High School de Los Angeles, tout en se produisant sur scène, principalement dans des vaudevilles.
C’est Sidney Olcott qui remarque Ruth Roland, en 1908, lors d’une représentation théâtrale à New York. Engagée par le studio Kamel Company pour 25 dollars par semaine, elle apparaît dans quelques film de Olcott où elle a comme partenaire le jeune Jack Conway, futur grand cinéaste. Dès 1911, elle tourne en vedette, sous la direction de Pat Hartigan, souvent aux côtés de John E. Brennan, Edward Coxen et Marshall Neilan, dans des dizaines de petits films vite réalisés, vite montés, vite projetés, mais vite oubliés aussi. Elle accroît progressivement sa notoriété et accumule une petite fortune. Elle est surnommée désormais la «Kamel Girl».
En 1915, Ruth Roland quitte la Kamel pour la Balboa Pictures. Elle est l’héroïne des sept premiers épisodes du sérial «The girl detective», Cleo Ridgely la remplace pour les épisodes 8 à 17, et c’est Marin Sais qui interprète cette jeune detective aventurière dans les 3 derniers volets. Dès lors, l’actrice, très sportive et excellente cavalière, brille dans des sérials d’aventures ou de westerns distribués par Pathé, qui vont connaître un succès mondial. Concurrente Pearl White qui se targue d’être le porte-drapeau du genre, on appelle alors Ruth «La reine des sérials à suspense». Se succèdent: «Qui paye?» (1915), «Le cercle rouge» (1915), «The price of folly» (1917), «Haut les mains!» (1918) et «Le tigre sacré» (1919). En femme d’affaires avisée, elle décide de produire ses propres films, maitrisant les sujets, le choix des réalisateurs et de ses partenaires. Dans «Les aventures de Ruth» (1919), elle est une héroïne intrépide, échappant à des dangers autant multiples que variés; dans «L’héritière du Radjah» (1920), elle incarne une jeune femme qui trouve une malle pleine de diamants volés, se les approprie et s’enfuit vers l’ouest, poursuivie par le voleur; dans «The avenging arrow» (1920), elle enquête pour découvrir la raison pour laquelle toutes ses ancêtres féminins ont été tués avant d’atteindre leur 21ème anniversaire; dans «L’aigle blanc» (1921), elle lutte pour obtenir la possession d’une mine d’or; dans «The haunted valley» (1923), où propriétaire d’un ranch, elle se bat pour conserver sa ferme face à une banque malhonnête. Elle s’éloigne du cinéma en 1930. Elle revient à sa première passion, le théâtre. En 1936, elle tente un retour à l’écran dans «From nine to nine» de Edgar G. Ulmer, qui reste son dernier film.
Après un mariage éclair avec Lionel T. Kent, entre mai 1917 et avril 1919, Ruth Roland épouse l’acteur et directeur d’une école de théâtre, Ben Bard en 1929. À 45 ans, l’actrice décède prématurément le 22 septembre 1937, emportée par un cancer. Lors de ses funérailles au Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery de Glendale, tout Hollywood est là, son cercueil est porté par Al Jolson, Eddie Cantor, Irving Cummings, Joe E. Brown et George E. Stone. En 1979, une boîte contenant la collection personnelle de ses films est découverte dans sa maison. Les héritiers en font don aux Archives du Cinéma de l’UCLA.
