Lawrence Semon est né le 16 juillet 1889, à West Point dans le Mississippi. Il est issu d’une lignée d’artistes. Son grand-père était magicien connu sous le nom de Herman le Grand, son père Zera le Grand, assisté de son épouse, un célèbre illusionniste, ventriloque et acrobate. Très tôt, il montre des dons pour la comédie, la danse et surtout il possède une belle voix. À 12 ans, il remporte la médaille d’or dans un concours de chant à Los Angeles, mais, lors d’un match de football, il reçoit un mauvais coup au visage qui lui fait perdre sa voix de soprano.
Désireux de s’orienter vers une carrière artistique, après des études supérieures à Savannah en Georgie, Larry Semon prend des cours de dessin et réalise des bandes dessinées pour différents journaux new-yorkais. À 26 ans, il décide de suivre les traces de ses parents. Il débute sur scène en effectuant des pantomimes et des monologues comiques. À la recherche de talents créatifs, il attire l’attention des studios Vitagraph Company qui l’engage comme scénariste. Rapidement, Larry Semon se révèle être un gagman ingénieux. Il passe rapidement à la réalisation de courts métrages burlesques. Voyant que certains comédiens ne traduisent pas vraiment ses idées, il se met à interpréter lui-même ses scénarii sous les traits d’un personnage clownesque aux traits lunaires et habillé de larges pantalons.
Larry Semon créait et réalise la célèbre série des Zigoto, une dizaine de films en une ou deux bobines qui regorgent de gags où les chutes en cascade et les courses spectaculaires constituent le principal support comique de ses œuvres, citons entre autres: «Zigoto au bagne» (1918) avec Stan Laurel où ils campent deux prisonniers qui s’évadent; «Zigoto prisonnier amoureux libéré» (1919), pour retrouver sa confortable cellule, il échange ses vêtements avec un sosie évadé et retourne en prison mais apprenant qu’il doit être pendu, il cherche à s’évader. Oliver Hardy devient son compère dans «Zigoto épicier; la série se termine avec «Zigoto Gabelou» (1922), où il campe un agent fédéral qui tente d’arrêter des contrebandiers. Son succès est comparable à celui de Charles Chaplin ou Buster Keaton, on le surnomme «The Comedy King». Ses partenaires attitrés sont souvent Frank Alexander et Lucille Carlisle, son épouse de 1922 à 1923. En France, il devient célèbre sous le nom de Zigoto, en Italie, il est Ridolini et décoré de la médaille d’honneur de la Foire de Milan, en Espagne, Romasin, en Catalogne, Jaimito, en Amérique du Nord, Lester, et en Amérique du Sud, Tomasin. Se refusant à faire lui-même ses cascades, il s’entoure de quatre doublures, habillés exactement comme lui, maquillés de la même façon, et tous munis d’un nez de carton-pâte identique au sien, si bien que les spectateurs ne se rendirent jamais compte du subterfuge.
En 1924, Larry Semon réalise «Wizard of Oz », un échec cuisant. Pendant le tournage, il tombe amoureux de Dorothy Dwan qu’il épouse. C’est à cette époque que les comédies burlesques passent de mode et ses derniers courts métrages ne font plus recette. En 1926, il travaille pour Pathé, puis dirige deux comédies pour Mack Sennett. En 1928 il est déclaré en faillite et pour éponger ses dettes il repart dans des tournées de vaudeville à travers les États-Unis, mais sa santé est défaillante. Une dépression nerveuse l’oblige à se faire hospitaliser. À peine remis, il est victime d’une double pneumonie qui l’emporte rapidement. Il décède dans la misère au sanatorium de Victorville le 8 octobre 1928, à l’âge de 39 ans.
