Creighton Tull Chaney nait à Oklahoma City le 10 février 1906. Il est le l’enfant unique de l’acteur Lon Chaney et de la chanteuse Cleva Creighton. Le couple d’artistes divorce en avril 1914. Suite à divers scandales et une tentative de suicide de sa mère, le jeune Creighton est placé dans divers foyers et familles d’accueil jusqu’en 1916. Lorsque son père épouse Hazel Hastings, il peut alors offrir un foyer stable à son fils. Afin d’éviter tout heurs, son père lui fait croire que sa mère est décédé. C’est lorsque son père meurt, en 1930, que Creighton apprend qu’elle est toujours en vie.
Dès son plus jeune âge, Creighton veut suivre les traces de son illustre père. Il travaille dur pour se faire un prénom alors que Lon Chaney tente de le décourager. Au début des années trente, il apparaît dans diverses productions sous le nom de Creighton Chaney. Il devient Lon Chaney Jr. dès 1935. Sa carrière commence à décoller, a tel point qu’il est pressenti pour interpréter, en 1939, «Quasimodo» pour William Dieterle. Mais le rôle est confié à Charles Laughton. Qu’à cela ne tienne, Lewis Milestone met en scène le célèbre roman de John Steinbeck, publié en 1937, «Des souris et des hommes. Lon Chaney Jr. incarne Lennie, colosse simple d’esprit trop gentil pour comprendre qu’il fait du mal, auprès de Burgess Meredith. Une histoire d’hommes simples, seulement liés par l’amitié, dans l’Amérique profonde de la grande dépression. En 1941, Universal Picture, fort du succès de «Frankenstein» de James Whales, dix ans auparavant, adapte le mythe du loup-garou. Lon Chaney Jr. est la vedette du film éponyme, réalisé par George Waggner. Pour s’assurer le succès, les producteurs engagent également Claude Rains. Bien que n’atteignant pas le succès colossal du film de genre inauguré par James Whale, le «Loup-garou» devient un classique du film d’horreur. Sous contrat avec Universal, Lon devient le spécialiste de ce genre de productions. Les suites proposées sont plus ou moins improbables, preuve en est avec «Frankenstein contre le loup-garou» (1943) réalisé par Roy William Neill ou encore «Les deux nigauds contre Frankenstein» (1948) comédie dirigée par Charles Barton, avec Bud Abbott et Lou Costello.
Ce qui différencie Lon Chaney Jr. de Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi ou encore de Christopher Lee, c’est qu’il est le seul comédien à représenter à lui seul les principaux monstres qui ont fait le succès de Universal (Dracula, Frankenstein, le Loup-garou et la momie). Tout en continuant à jouer en tête d’affiche pour des séries B, l’acteur interprète des rôles secondaires dans des films plus ambitieux. Il est, entre-autres, aux côtés de Grace Kelly et Gary Cooper dans «Le train sifflera trois fois» (1953) de Fred Zinnemann où encore dans «L’homme à abattre» (1953) de Raoul Walsh, avec James Cagney.
Dans les années soixante, Lon Chaney Jr. reprend ses rôles de monstres ou de savants fous dans une série de films à petit budget pour Roger Corman. Atteint d’un cancer de la gorge, sa voix se fait de plus en plus rauque. En 1970, il tourne «Dracula contre Frankenstein» de Al Adamson. Ayant des difficultés pour s’exprimer, il interprète Groton, l’assistant muet du docteur Frankenstein. Ayant connu toute sa vie de graves problèmes avec l’alcool, sa carrière en fut très affectée. Usé par les excès et affaibli par plusieurs maladies, il s’éteint le 12 juillet 1973 emporté par une crise cardiaque. Son petit-fils, Ron Chaney, continuera de perpétuer sa mémoire en organisant des colloques sur la vie aux les Etats-Unis.
