Boris Karloff naît William Henry Pratt le 23 novembre 1887 à Londres (quartier de Camberwell) dans une fratrie de neuf enfants. Sa mère est la troisième épouse d’un fonctionnaire des douanes. Après ses études secondaires, le jeune homme fait un bref passage au «Kings College» de l’université de Londres, puis il émigre au Canada où s’est installée sa grand-tante, Anna Leonowens (1834-1915), dont les mémoires authentiques seront à l’origine de la comédie musicale et du film «Le roi et moi» (1957) avec Yul Brynner et Deborah Kerr. D’abord ouvrier agricole William est ensuite embauché sous le nom de Boris Karloff dans une compagnie théâtrale itinérante dont il partage la vie pendant une dizaine d’années. Marié en 1910 à Grace Harding, il divorce trois ans plus tard. Il épouse en 1915 une comédienne, Olive de Wilton. À la fin de la décennie il s’installe définitivement à Hollywood où il devient chauffeur tout en jouant des petits rôles au cinéma. En 1920, il convole en troisièmes noces avec Montana Laurena Williams, bientôt remplacée par Hélène Vivian Soule. En 1928, il rencontre Dorothy Stine qui restera sa femme une vingtaine d’années. Il n’aura qu’un seul enfant, Sarah Jane, née en 1938.
En 1931, Boris Karloff qui a déjà une soixantaine de films à son actif, devient enfin célèbre en interprétant pour, James Whale, la créature imaginée plus d’un siècle plus tôt par Mary Shelley, le monstre du Dr Frankenstein. Et malgré des films comme «La patrouille perdue» (1933) de John Ford, il est désormais et presque inexorablement cantonné à des personnages bizarres. Il partage parfois l’affiche avec Bela Lugosi pour mieux pimenter encore les histoires comme «Le corbeau» (1935) d’après Edgar Poe. Toujours durant la même période Boris Karloff endosse également des rôles d’Asiatiques: le Dr Fu Manchu dans «La maison des supplices» (1932), mais aussi le beaucoup plus sympathique inspecteur sino-américain James Lee Wong pour cinq films dont «Mr Wong in Chinatown» (1939).
À partir de la seconde moitié des années quarante Boris Karloff se fait moins présent sur les grands écrans. Il est néanmoins le partenaire à contre courant de comiques comme Danny Kaye et surtout Bud Abbott et Lou Costello («Deux nigauds chez les tueurs» - 1949). Les deux décennies suivantes, il travaille également pour le petit écran où il interprète en 1949 Jonathan Brewster dans une adaptation télévisée du célèbre «Arsenic et vieilles dentelles» (1944) de Frank Capra; mais il est également l’oncle Vanya et Don Quichotte. Dans les années soixante, il retrouve des rôles d’épouvante avec des cinéastes européens comme le Français Jacques Tourneur pour «La comédie de la terreur» (1963) avec Vincent Price; l’Italien Mario Bava pour «Les trois visages de la peur» (1963) avec Michèle Mercier; l’Espagnol Santos Alcover pour «Le collectionneur de cadavres» (1967) avec Jean-Pierre Aumont, Viveca Lindfors et Rubén Rojo. Et il termine sa carrière en 1968 avec son cent-soixantième long métrage, une coproduction USA-Mexique de Jack Hill et Juan Ibáñez.
Boris Karloff, au pseudonyme mondialement connu bien peu britannique, passe les dernières années de sa vie avec sa cinquième épouse Evelyn Hope Helmore, dans un petit village tranquille du sud de son Angleterre natale. Il décède à l’Hôpital de Midhurst (Sussex) des suites d’une pneumonie, le 2 février 1969, à l’âge de quatre-vingt-un ans.
