Tom Tyler, né Vincent Markowski, vient au monde le 9 août 1903 à Port Henry dans l’état de New-York. Après ses études, le jeune homme se lance dans la boxe et participe à plusieurs championnats d’haltérophilies.
Au début de 1924, le jeune homme s’intalle à Los Angeles et décroche son premier contrat comme cascadeur. Il double les artistes dans «Leatherstocking» (1924) de George B. Seitz et dans la super-production de Fred Niblo «Ben Hur» (1925) ave Ramon Novarro. En 1925, il signe un contrat avec la FBO (Film Booking Offices) présidée par Joseph Kennedy, le père du futur Président John F. Kennedy. Il joue son premier rôle principal dans «Let’s go Gallagher» (1925).
Tom Tyler tourne alors une centaine de westerns de série B jusqu’à la fin des années trente, devenant de ce fait la star cinématographique des matinées du samedi aux Etats-Unis. Parmi ses films les plus populaires, citons: «The phantom of the West» (1930) un serial en dix épisodes de D. Ross Lederman, «The phantom of the air» (1933) de Ray Taylor, «Trigger Tom» (1935) de Harry S. Webb et «The phantom of the range» (1936) de Robert F. Hill.
En 1936, Tom Tyler ralenti la cadence et rejoint la troupe du Wallace Brothers Circus pour une tournée à travers l’Amérique du Nord. En 1938, il revient au cinéma dans un film de Robert Florey et entame une série de seconds rôles dans plusieurs productions de qualité sous la direction des grands cinéastes, tels: John Ford pour «La chevauchée fantastique» (1939), «Sur la piste des Mohawks» (1939) et «Les raisins de la colère» (1941); Victor Fleming pour «Autant en emporte le vent» (1939) et William Wyler pour «L’homme du désert» (1940).
En 1941, il reprend le chemin des séries B, avec «Capitaine Marvel» de John English et William Witney suivi d’une cinquantaine de westerns pour le plus grand plaisir des amateurs du genre. Il acquiert une énorme célébrité en participant à plusieurs épisodes de la série des «Trois Mousquetaires» en compagnie d’autres cow-boys populaires: Bob Steele et Jimmie Dodd.
Au alentours de la quarantaine, Tom Tyler souffre d’arthrite et de rhumatisme qui rendent ses mouvements très douloureux, peut-être une conséquence des ses cascades d’antan. Il doit abandonner les rôles mouvementés et accepte de petites participations dans quelques productions. Il retrouve entre autres John Ford pour «Les sacrifiés » (1945), mais tourne aussi avec Raoul Walsh, Samuel Fuller et George Sidney.
En 1950, sous la direction de Thomas Carr, il tourne encore plusieurs westerns à petit budget. Mais début 1953, souffrant terriblement, Tom Tyler se retire chez sa sœur à Hamtranck dans le Michigan pour se reposer. Jamais, il ne reviendra devant les caméras. Il meurt le 1er mai 1954, victime d’une crise cardiaque.
